Sugar Factory Playhouse:

History

The West Jordan Performing Arts Board was established in 1995. In 2002, the name was changed to the West Jordan Theater Arts Board.

The first performance in summer of 1995 was Ruth Hale's "Dude Ranch", performed in a picnic pavilion in the West Jordan Main Park. For the next eight years, we did a show in the park every summer. Only twice in that time did we find an indoor venue to perform winter shows. Then, in 2004, we were allowed to use a portion of the old West Jordan sugar factory that had been a shop, a boxing workout room, and a truck storage garage. When we started rehearsing for "Footloose", we literally rehearsed around a street sweeper that was parked in the middle of where the stage and front seats are now.

The room was built and painted by Dave and Sandy Newton. There is a plaque by the front door proclaiming this venue Newton Hall.

"Once Upon A Mattress" will be the 18th production of West Jordan City, the 7th in this building.
